Research Assistant/Doctoral Candidate in Argumentative AI and Natural Language Processing (NLP) (m/w/d)

Kern- und Hauptaufgaben

  • Design and develop a multi-layered evaluation framework for reasoning in Argumentative AI
  • Build interactive interfaces for annotation, model evaluation, and expert feedback
  • Conduct user studies to assess usability and reasoning quality of LLM-generated output
  • Collaborate with domain experts to align evaluation methods with philosophical concepts
  • Contribute to NLP/AI and interdisciplinary publications as well as the broader development of evaluation standards in AI reasoning
  • The position is linked to a doctorate in this subject area.

Erwartete Kompetenzen / Profil

  • Master's degree in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Computational Linguistics, or a related discipline
  • Demonstrated interest or experience in Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Argumentative AI
  • Familiarity with Natural Language Inference (NLI), corpus creation, and evaluation methodologies is a strong plus
  • Interest or experience in human–AI interaction, argumentation theory, or AI ethics is a plus
  • Strong programming skills in Python
  • Experience in web/frontend development (e.g., React, Vue, or similar frameworks) is an advantage
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, including the ability to work in interdisciplinary teams
  • Diligent, responsible, structured, goal-oriented, and independent working style
  • Very good command of spoken and written English

Our research at the Chair of Data Science and Natural Language Processing at the Institute of Computer Science (ICS-HSG) focuses on the areas of large language models (LLMs) and quantitative data science. You will play a key role in designing and building frameworks that will help us understand and improve how AI systems reason.
